DIY Guide: How to Spackle: A DIY Guide to Flawless Walls

I’ve partnered with DAP Canada to refresh my hallway using their DAP FAST DRY Premium Spackling. DAP FAST DRY Premium Spackling is a professional-grade spackling compound uniquely formulated to provide strength and durability like traditional heavyweight spackling, but also dries fast and can also be painted in as little as 15 minutes. Its ready-to-use, smooth formula spreads easily and won't sink, shrink or crack, filling even the largest of drywall repairs in one coat.

What You’ll Need

Before starting, gather these tools and materials:

• DAP Fast Dry Premium Spackle

• Putty knife (2–4 inches wide)

• Sandpaper (120-220 grit) or sanding sponge

• Damp cloth or sponge

• Paint and paintbrush/roller

Step 1: Clean the Area

Start by cleaning the area around the hole. Use a damp cloth to remove dust, debris, or grease, as these can prevent the spackle from adhering properly. Let the area dry completely.

Step 2: Prep the Hole

For small holes (like nail holes), no additional preparation is needed. If the hole is larger (e.g., over ½ inch in diameter), you might need to:

• Remove loose or jagged edges with a utility knife.

Step 3: Apply the Spackle

1. Scoop a small amount of spackling paste onto your putty knife.

2. Press the paste into the hole firmly, ensuring it’s completely filled.

3. Use the knife’s edge to smooth the surface, removing excess paste.

4. For larger holes, you may need to apply the spackle in layers, allowing each layer to dry according to the package instructions (usually 1–2 hours).

Step 4: Sand Smooth

Once the spackle is dry, lightly sand the area to blend it with the surrounding wall. Be careful not to oversand, which can create a dip in the surface.

Step 5: Clean Again

Wipe away any dust from sanding with a damp cloth or sponge. This step ensures your paint will adhere evenly.

Step 6: Paint the Area

Touch up the repaired spot with paint. If the spackled area is large or noticeable, use primer first to prevent the patch from standing out. Apply paint in thin layers, feathering the edges to blend seamlessly with the rest of the wall.
